I’ve been strong for nineteen days. No high street knock-off, end-of-season clearance rack, or vintage store window display has tempted me into breaking my shopping fast. But recently, in a literal flash of bright white, I saw the coolest girl crossing the street in a pair of all too familiar sneakers, the Fila Disruptors.

Their squat silhouette makes them look like baby shoes. They’ll shorten your legs, because shoes this chunky were originally intended for providing ample arch support. You can buy them at Sears. On sale. By all accounts, these shoes should not be my swan song.

But since orthopedic-inspired shoes cropped up on the SS18 runway, the style has been making its rounds on all the usual celeb suspects. Bella Hadid wore suspiciously similar Balenciaga’s; Kendall Jenner wore her dad shoes with mom jeans (and an uncle’s coat); and Laura Harrier stars in Louis Vuitton’s latest spring campaign wearing their latest kicks.

A pre-worn look, box fresh.

The high fashion styles aren’t for me though (not that my bank account would allow it). I want the source material. These Fila’s will turn into beaters without regret (that’s sneaker lingo for shoes you don’t mind beating up). I haven’t yet taken the plunge and made the purchase, but that’s not because of my credit card abstinence. They’re selling out everywhere, which means I’m clearly not the only one lusting. I’m currently on the hunt for my size (holler at Fila’s #influencer team), but honest to god, next on my list? Glittery Sketchers D’Lites.
