“These are the colors that, to me, convey wintertime glamour,” says makeup pro Violette, referring to the plush palette she used to magnify smoldering supe Joan Smalls’s distinctive features. A social media phenom with more than 150,000 Instagram followers—not to mention her wildly popular YouTube tutorials—Violette is famous for her dexterity with textures and hues. Now she’s bringing her signature French chic to beauty-biz grande dame Estée Lauder. As the brand’s global beauty director, Violette says her goal is to create products “that are like having a makeup artist in your bag.” Her philosophy—that beauty shouldn’t be overly complicated, and that runway-caliber effects should be a cinch to replicate—will manifest itself in versatile, user-friendly collections debuting later this spring. Expect unexpected finishes and formulas—and a huge capacity for fun. “You can be bold and creative but at the same time not have to worry about making mistakes,” she says of her handiwork. For genius inspiration, look no further than Violette’s kit, which she equips with two categories of makeup: what she calls “best friend” essentials—foundation, mascara, blush—for everyday enhancement, and “fashion accessory” maquillage, for dramatic moments such as those she executed so exquisitely on Smalls. “Gloss, glitter, and metallics are like jewelry,” she says. “They really bring fanciness to a look, and they can be quite rock ’n’ roll.” What’s not to love? —April Long
