Summer feels like a long lost dream, but it will happen. And in the meantime, it’s never too early to begin plotting and planning your warm weather hair. Will this be the year you cut it off to beat the heat? What accessories can you add to stand out in the crowd? We picked the brain of celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins, who works on the manes of Charli XCX, Elizabeth Olsen, and Alison Brie to see what exactly is going to be cool for the summer.

Party like it’s 1999. Literally.

Attention all millennials: The golden years, when LFO liked girls that wore Abercrombie & Fitch, are back. “This summer, we’re going to see a return of late ’90s and early 2000s hair accessories,” says Hawkins. It’s time to reinvest in butterfly clips, colored barrettes, scrunchies, and snap clips. Take Hawkins’ sound advice and, as he says, “make those ‘Baby One More Time’ fantasies come true.

Micro Braids

Festival season is fast approaching and it’s time to live your best boho life by adding a couple of tiny braids to your hair. “The smaller the braid, the more delicate and refined it looks,” says Hawkins. Channel the ultimate cool girl Zoë Kravitz with this look.

Curly Show

“While sleek hair will always be in, we’re seeing a wave of…waves coming in,” says Hawkins. “If your hair is naturally curly, diffuse it—I’m obsessed with the Dyson diffuser—and apply a curl defining cream like Deva Curl SuperCream. If your hair is on the straighter side, invest in a smaller curling iron and wrap away in different directions.”

Drop Your Pony Low

“High ponytails are moving south this summer,” says the hairstylist. It’s time to say goodbye to the braid and buns, and let the hair hang low and back. It can be sleek or textured but the low ponytail always looks classy.“Bonus points if you wrap your hair around the band.” he adds.

Keep It Blunt

It’s time for a chop. “Instead of a graduated, stacked, or A-line bob, we’re going to see a lot of one-length, blunt cuts,” explains Hawkins. It’s especially flattering if you have fine hair. “Use a tiny drop of hair oil (I love Ouai’s) to get extra shine,” he advises.
